We have read the story of Adam and Eve many, many times over the years. However, it never ceases to amaze me that no matter how many times we read that passage, we almost always discover something new each time we read it.
This morning, we read Genesis chapters one, two and three. As many times as I have read this story of creation, I had never noticed a very clear shadow of a tragic reality of life that has continued to this day. Obviously, neither Adam nor Eve saw it either.
Where It All Began
This tragedy unfolds with God so lovingly and graciously preparing the perfect place for Adam and Eve called the garden of Eden. They had everything a human could ask for. It was beautiful to behold and It had everything they could possibly want to eat. But most important, the Garden of Eden had a life giving tree.
God put them in that garden and told them, this is all yours. You may freely enjoy everything in the garden. However, whatever you do, DO NOT eat the fruit of just this one tree, because if you do, you will die.
So, what did they do? Of course they ignored that clear warning from God and chose to listen to and obey someone who told them to do the exact opposite, even though God had told them to do so would cost them their lives.
Did you catch that? God put them in a perfect situation. They had access to every good thing in life including a tree that would give them eternal life. Yet, they willingly chose to eat the one thing God had told them would kill them.
Thank God For Second Chances
I knew about everything good to eat and the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Until this reading, I never realized they could have just walked up to the tree of life, at any time and eaten the fruit at will.
The tragedy is that mankind has been repeating this pattern ever since Adam and is still repeating this pattern today. We are still listening to all the misleading voices that are whispering in our ears.
The word of God tells us that if we come to Jesus, he will give us eternal life (John 10:25-28). Yet, like Adam and Eve, so many of us are still allowing Satan to cause us to ignore the word of God and miss the opportunity to enjoy eternal life in a perfect place.
Also, like Adam and Eve, the truth is right in front of us, within our grasp. Yet, we too, with our eyes wide open, continue to choose death over life. If you are listening to Satan’s treacherous lies and choosing death over life, what is your excuse? Who are you going to blame it on when God confronts you on judgement day?
Fortunately for you, if you are reading this post, there is hope and you still have time to let go the tree of death and grab hold to the salvation God has provided through the death and resurrection of his son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.
We wish you and yours a happy and prosperous New Year. Be blessed.
